about

Back in November 2015 the BBC announcer Peter Donaldson died. It was widely reported that his would have been the voice to announce a Nuclear attack in Britain. This track uses both his words, along with samples from the 1970's UK Public Information film "Protect and Survive". As a child growing up in the 1970s and 80s the fear of a Nuclear War was always there.....

Words"Protect and Survive" (first 30 seconds)

Nuclear explosions are caused by weapons such H bombs or Atom Bombs. They are like ordinary explosions only many times more powerful. They cause great heat and blast. They also make a cloud of deadly dust which falls slowly to the ground. This is called fallout.
So these are the two danger. First heat and blast which is followed bu fallout.
The heat and blast is so severe that it can kill and can destroy building for up to 5 miles from the explosion. Fallout is dust that is sucked up from the ground by the explosion. It can be deadly dangerous. It rises high in the air and can be carried by winds for hundreds of miles before falling to the ground.

Peter Donaldson's announcement (excerpt):

Stay calm. And stay in your own house.
We shall be on the air every hour on the hour. Stay tuned to this wavelength, but switch your radios off now to save your batteries. That is the end of this broadcast.
