about

The book “Ventus” is the first novel by Karl Schroeder and starts off as fantasy then gradually turns into sci-fi tackling themes such as Artificial Intelligence and the nature of reality. These tracks are inspired by the characters and the world of Ventus. If you want to read Ventus yourself, you can download a copy directly from Karl’s website here www.kschroeder.com/my-books/ventus

A (very) Brief Synopsis.....

Ventus is a world settled by humans from Earth. A small terraforming probe was sent ahead filled with the nano technology necessary to terraform the world ready for the first colonists, who followed decades later. However, the probe’s core programming was altered so that when the colonists arrived, they found that the machines and systems did not recognise them as the true masters of the world. The colonists were allowed to live on the world with no technology more advanced than steam. Over the generations the humans forgot a large part of their heritage and learned to live with the “winds” - the AI systems and machines that maintained Ventus. To the humans the “winds” were gods, and people who claimed that they could speak with the winds or interpret their will enjoyed privilege and power in society. The winds themselves managed Ventus for their own ends and any ship or technology from outside was usually detected and destroyed by the winds which helped keep Ventus in isolation from the wider human civilization.

Outside Ventus over the centuries AI evolved and, inevitable, a war was fought between a god-like AI entity named 3340 and the humans. Eventually 3340 was defeated and a last remaining part of it embedded inside a human follower named Armiger fled to Ventus for refuge. Upon arrival he spread some of his embedded nanotechnology to different people so he could be aware of the happenings elsewhere on Ventus. He was followed there by the human operative Calandria May tasked with destroying the last remaining parts of 3340 and prevent it rising again. Both Armiger and Calandria May were largely successful in evading detection by the Winds.

The story follows a young man, Jordan Mason, who unknowingly received some of Arimger’s nanotech. After experiencing visions from the link with Armiger, Jordan learns to interact with it and begins to see what Ventus and the Winds really are......
